NATIONWIDE -- Federal politicians are joining the opposition to plans to allow airline passengers to bring small knives on board.

New York Senator Charles Schumer said this morning that allowing knives on planes poses a safety threat.

He also opposes other banned items the Transportation Security Administration intends to allow on planes, such as novelty baseball bats, billiard cues, and hockey sticks. Such items have been banned since September 11th.

The TSA plans to permit them again as of April 25th. TSA officials said pilots and air marshals are trained to provide security should any of these items be used as a weapon.
