CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- One person is dead and another was sent to the hospital following a bus crash on the Northway. State Police say it happened just before noon in the southbound lanes between Exits 10 and 9.
A bus carrying 34 lacrosse players and three coaches from St. Michael's College in Vermont was headed to Long Island for a tournament. State Police said a Porsche in front of the bus lost control, causing the bus to hit the vehicle. The car then went off into the median and the bus went into a ditch.
"The children only have four minor injuries. Unfortunately, a 64-year-old passenger in the Porsche was deceased on the scene. The driver of the Porsche was taken to Albany Med, where he is in critical but stable condition. There was a third vehicle involved, a work van vehicle type," said New York State Police Lieutenant Greg Thomas.
The Red Cross is providing aid at the crash scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The players and their coaches were transported to the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Volunteer Firehouse by school buses to remove them from the scene and out of the rain.
The team's coach said once he realized all the athletes were safe, he had some phone calls to make.
"I've had the ability to talk to parents on the phone, to let parents know they're safe and everyone's okay. They're safe, they're happy, they're healing together," said Patrick ivory, St. Michael’s Lacrosse coach.
The game the team was supposed to play against Mercy College has been rescheduled.
State Police held a news conference about the crash. Watch the news conference in its entirety here:
