MOHAWK VALLEY, N.Y. -- Flags were lowered to half-staff at the Midstate Correctional Facility in Marcy to honor of a fallen colleague. Michael Renshaw, 51, of Herkimer, was at Gaffey's Fast Lube, when he was shot and killed.

Renshaw was a corrections officer at Midstate for more than 20 years. His co-workers say he was a very caring and intelligent man who loved his job. The staff took time throughout the day to remember their fallen friend and colleague.

"We have a moment of silence at lineup. We do a formal line up for every shift for security. At that time, we have a moment of silence and allowing the staff to come up and say anything they want to say about him. Tell stories or however they want to express themselves with it," said Midstate Correctional Facility Superintendent Brandon Smith.

Counselors have been made available for the staff at the corrections facility as well.
