COLONIE, N.Y. -- A somewhat confusing scene for bystanders and officials, as an accident in Colonie just after 9 p.m. Saturday actually began with a car chase in Guilderland.

"Apparently, the guy was coming down Western Avenue when Guilderland tried to stop him for V and T, vehicle and traffic infractions. He wouldn't stop," Colonie Police Lieutenant John Archambault said.

After hopping on the Northway, and then getting off a short distance later, Joseph Brennan Jr. got as far as Central Avenue.

"First of all, he didn't possess a license. Not that he was suspended; he just didn't possess a license. He didn't have a license," Archambault added.

After crashing into the decorative median between Colonie Center and Northway Center, Brennan continued to travel eastbound on Central Avenue, hitting a Volkswagen. That Volkswagen continued on to hit the wall of the Regal Dry Cleaners.

Archambault explained, "The suspect's car became disabled and just stopped there."

Police said it was at that time that Brennan grabbed his 16-month-old son and a three-year-old child from inside of the car and unsuccessfully tried to run away from the scene.

"We got possession for marijuana on him. We called in a drug recognition expert which does a whole process and based on the results of that process, he was arrested for driving while billing impaired by drugs," said Archambault.

The two children were treated for minor injuries at Albany Medical Center. Brennan was also charged with Leandra's law. He is scheduled to appear in Colonie Court Monday night.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information regarding it is asked to contact the Colonie Police Traffic Safety Unit at (518)-783-2744 or Sergeant Eric Batcheldor of the Guilderland Police Department at (518)-356-1501.
