NEW YORK STATE -- Senator Charles Schumer addressed his push to adopt a bill of rights that guarantees passenger protection while on a cruise.

The move comes on the heels of a number of incidents involving cruise ships being stranded at sea and passengers left in deplorable conditions.

The bill of rights would guarantee passengers protection while on a cruise. Schumer hopes industry leaders will voluntarily adopt his bill of rights.

Schumer said, "Many of the cruise ships don't fully reimburse for what the loss was. Many don't have adequate medical personal on the ships. Many don't have backup generators, which is attached to the plumbing, water and electricity."

Schumer says they can't regulate what happens on the ship, but they can prevent ships from docking at U.S. ports. He says he would rather not take such drastic measures and have the industry clean up their act.
