SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady City Mission celebrated the holiday by serving about 400 people for its traditional outdoor Memorial Day barbecue.

Burgers, hotdogs and fun for the kids rounded out the day. Organizers say this is more than just a cook out. It's the community gathering as a family.

"We want to celebrate the holidays at the mission summer holidays like Memorial Day, a lot of folks don't have things going on. There aren't backyard barbeques, so we wanna make sure the community can come together and celebrate this important day for our country and for us as a community, this is just a large family picnic," said Michael Saccocio.

In addition to the barbecue and activities at the Davis Pavilion, staff and volunteers also prepared and transported up to 60 meals to elderly residents at the nearby Ten Eyck Apartments.
