SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- General Electric is bringing over 300 jobs to the area with the launch of its newest factory.
The plant will manufacture a new type of battery, made of sodium nickel, that GE said is the next generation of industrial energy storage.
Company officials said energy isn't being harnessed and stored to be used as efficiently as it could. They use the example of the energy that is lost when a train applies its brakes.
Prescott Logan, GE General Manager of Energy Storage Technologies, said, "To store energy in a smarter and more efficient ways is going to open a lot of opportunities and make investments in renewable technologies go further, electric vehicles, that whole energy ecosystem."
The first order for the new batteries came from South Africa.
The plant is scheduled to be operational sometime next month.
