FERNDALE, N.Y. -- Tourism has kicked off in Sullivan County and officials said this week's warm weather is a sign of a great season to come. The industry is one of the largest economic boosters in the area, pumping more than $300 million into the local economy, according to tourism officials.
An estimate one million people visit the county's lakes, concert venues, museums and other attractions. The large percentage of summer homeowners also contributes to the seasonal boost.
Every year, the Sullivan County Visitors Association compiles a list and prints out tourism guides in preparation for the season. According to the association, everything really starts to pick up in June once the kids are out of school.
"We're very close to the city, but there's a beauty that is just unparalleled here, that I think once the visitor comes here, which we've seen, they want to come back again and again and again. I'm very excited," said Roberta Byron-Lockwood of the Sullivan County Visitors Association.
