RENSSELAER, N.Y. -- Five new law enforcement K-9's from different areas in the Capital Region are now certified.

Trainers certified the K-9's on Friday at the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office.

K-9's receive different roles in their departments, ranging from explosive detection, patrol and tracking, and advanced narcotics detection. Sheriff's Deputies said the K-9 officers are important to the communities safety.

"Everyday they'll check building, government buildings, train stations. They'll go different places we routinely check one its good for the dog to have that knowledge and experience and secondly, we hope to keep these areas safe," said Jack Mahar, Rensselaer County Sheriff.

The K-9's train for 12 weeks before their exam and certification.
