ALBANY, N.Y. -- Immigrant rights advocates are calling on Governor Paterson to withdraw the state from his immigration program.

Advocates say the Secure Communities denies immigrants of their basic human rights. They say the program sends all the data on everyone who was arrested for any reason to Homeland Security. Then anyone who is not documented becomes targeted for immediate deportation.

Advocates also say programs like this weaken public safety.

"It causes immigrants to not report crimes. People in immigrant communities fear police coming in. One of the problems is, you're going to see a massive increase in sexual harassment and molestation of women. Most of the people we are talking about are women," said Robb Smith of Interfaith Impact of New York State.

Saturday marks International Migrants Day. Back in 1990, the Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
