ALBANY, N.Y. -- A local rabbi accused of sexually abusing two teenage boys was arraigned in Albany County Court on Tuesday.

Rabbi Yakkov Weiss, 29, of Loudonville is accused of abusing the 13-year-old boys in 2007. One of the alleged victims is the son of another local rabbi.

Weiss' attorney said he has a number of witnesses to defend his character, but Albany County District Attorney David Soares says reputation alone doesn't prove innocence.

"There are people from a variety of different professions and different reputations that commit these offenses every single day, and therefore a person's reputation in the community should have no bearing on the offenses that are being alleged here," said Soares.

"This is just something that makes the hair on the back of your neck tingle," said defense attorney Arnold Proskin. "I'm not saying that as a joke. It just bothers me greatly, it bothers a lot of people, and we're defending this matter. We're saying, ok, you've made these charges, now prove it."

Weiss was first arrested in September 2008, then he was re-arrested in October while he was out on bail.

Weiss is the founder of Chabad of Colonie and the Chabad Hebrew School.
