ALBANY, N.Y. -- Slain 10-year-old Kathina Thomas is being remembered by her Sheridan Prep Elementary School classmates Saturday. It's part of the school's Back-to-School Blast. Students and their families have a day filled with food, games and face painting.

A memorial is being held to remember Kathina-who was a fourth-grader at the school when she was killed in May of last year. Kathina was shot and killed by a stray bullet while she was standing in front of her house.

The event was a chance for families from the Sheridan Prep Academy to come together and get off on the right foot for the start of the school year-

The principal says kids get a chance to meet the teachers and staff at a fun event rather than in the classroom.

Kathina was honored at the event but she'll be honored at the school every day as part of the library is named in her honor.
