TROY, N.Y. -- The murder trial of a Troy man accused of killing his infant son is underway in Rensselaer County Court.
Adrian Thomas, 27, is charged with second-degree murder for the death of his 4-month-old son, Matthew, in September 2008.
Thomas is accused of throwing the baby onto a mattress several times and shaking him because he was frustrated about losing his job and not being able to find work, according to prosecutors.
Matthew was taken to the hospital a few days later and died at Albany Medical Center after he was taken off life support.
The defense says the child died of septic shock. They are also questioning a taped confession Thomas gave to police.
Prosecutor Christa Book said, "The defendant, frustrated, picked his son up and threw him from shoulder height, all 500 pounds of his weight, down onto a mattress on the ground. He didn't just throw his son once. He didn't just throw his son twice. He threw his son onto that mattress on three different occasions because things weren't going so well for him."
Defense attorney Ingrid Effman said, "The police used these tactics to get him to say what they wanted to hear, support this false theory. My client after being awake for nearly 40 hours, broke down, threw in the towel and told police what they wanted to hear. The problem is, what he told him doesn't support the conclusion in this case. This baby died of overwhelming septic shock."
A lieutenant with the Troy Fire Department who was the paramedic at the scene took the stand today.
