ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The National Organization for Women wants the New York Senate to expel Senator Hiram Monserrate following his conviction on a misdemeanor charge that he assaulted his girlfriend.
NOW's New York chapter also criticized the Bronx judge who acquitted the ex-cop Thursday on a felony charge that would have automatically removed him from office. NOW says it wants the Senate's Democratic leaders to find the courage to oust him.
Senate Democratic Conference leader Senator John Sampson says they will review past practices and follow the law in considering what to do. Democrats have a narrow 32-seat majority, including Monserrate.
A spokesman for the 30-member Republican minority, John McArdle, says they expect the Democratic leaders to deal with this appropriately.
