ALBANY, N.Y. -- A new commercial building in Albany is being built with the hopes of revitalizing the Park South neighborhood.
Community leaders gathered to celebrate the building's progress. So far the structural steel component of the building is up.
The $17 million, three-story building is located on New Scotland Avenue. The first floor will be used by retail stores including CVS and SEFCU. Upper floor tenants will include private medical offices.
The project will also beautify the city with new sidewalks, plantings and handicapped accessibility.
Mayor Jerry Jennings said, ''Think about it. Seven years ago, eight years ago we had very high crime stats here, we had a lot of police presence. You know what, I'm hearing it turning around, and I'm seeing it turning around because of investments made along this corridor."
Jennings said the project will create more than 100 permanent new jobs. The building is expected to be completed by next summer.
