ALBANY, N.Y. -- Mayor Jerry Jennings announced Wednesday the creation of an advisory panel to help select the new chief of the Albany Police Department.

Steven Krokoff has been acting police chief since James Tuffey retired from the post in September. He left the department amid allegations that he used a racial slur during a conversation with an assistant chief.

Jennings said the new panel includes a broad spectrum of the community with vast experience with the criminal justice system.

The panel's chair, Judge Larry Rosen, said he expects the new panel to quickly set up procedures to attract and interview prospective candidates and that the recommendations to the mayor will be made in a short period of time.

The panel includes:

  • Judge Larry Rosen, Chair - Former Albany City and Albany County Court Judge

  • Sheriff James Campbell - Albany County Sheriff

  • Dale Getto - Principal, North Albany Academy

  • Dr. Alice Green - Executive Director, Center for Law and Justice

  • Hon. Daniel Herring - Member of Albany Common Council/Ward 13

  • Dr. Alan Lizotte - Interim Dean, School of Criminal Justice/University at Albany

  • Hon. Carolyn McLaughlin - Majority Leader, Albany Common Council

  • Felix Perez - Resource and Development Director, Salvation Army
