ALBANY, N.Y. -- The jury was selected Monday in the federal corruption trial of Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno. Twelve jurors - seven women and five men - along with four alternates were chosen. They were dismissed after opening statements were heard.

The 80-year-old Bruno was indicted in January on eight counts for "theft of honest services." He is accused of using his position to collect more than $3 million in commissions and gifts in return for using his influence to benefit labor unions and private businessmen.

On Monday, the prosecution talked about Bruno repeatedly breaking the law and knowingly trying to conceal it. They said this case is all about intent and that Bruno knew what he was doing was wrong.

The defense, meanwhile, said that's not true and that Bruno was as transparent as possible. The defense said Bruno had separate business relationships that transpired over more than a decade and that there was no scheme.

Bruno was optimistic when arriving to the federal courthouse in Albany Monday morning.

"I'm doing great," he said. "Looking forward to this day. I've been looking forward for a long time to this day. Okay? I've done nothing wrong, and over the next several weeks that's going to be proven."

Bruno could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Witnesses are expected to begin testifying Tuesday.
