Search team looks for lost deaf dog

By: Kim Lengle

A 4-year-old bulldog-mix is on the run, but this isn't your typical lost dog story. This pooch is deaf. Our Kim Lengle caught up with the search team in Colonie and brings us this story.

COLONIE, N.Y. -- Volunteers have gathered at the Crossings in Colonie. They are handing out posters and they are taking bags of dog treats for any sighting of Luna.

"We've been on the trail since she went missing Saturday morning a week ago," said Ralph Rataul, the lost dog's owner.

She's a 4-year old white bulldog mix. Apparently very smart; last Friday she slipped out of the kennel, opening three doors before she reached the front one and she's been on the run ever since

"If she was a hearing dog, we would have had her last night," said one volunteer.

Complicating the search is the fact that Luna's deaf. She can't hear your call or your whistle, but she does read sign language.

"Two that you're probably going to use would be 'come here,' which is just petting your knees. The other on is 'ok girl,' and that's just the ok sign," said Ratual.

"There's a good and bad things about that she's deaf. She can't hear a car coming," said Kathy Rogers of Shaker Veterinary Hospital.

But she also won't be frightened by noises that she's not familiar with and her owner Ralph is banking on it.

"Good day John. Sighting of Luna. Handy Andy across from the Lutheran Church," said Ratual.

"There's over a hundred people out searching that's what's amazed us," said Rogers.

One concern is the extreme cold but veterinarians say all the snow we've had could actually be a good thing because if Luna burrows herself into it, it could act as insulation.

"Look at all these perfect hiding spots," said Ratual.

"I was just back there. It's a wide open field," said another volunteer.

"It’s been sort of like we're one step behind all week," said Ratual.

Ralph says the search will continue and if you happen to see Luna, please call Shaker Veterinary Hospital at (518) 458-9669.
