RPI hockey team practices outdoors

By: Erin Connolly

The RPI men's hockey team hit the ice for practice Wednesday, but to shake things up, they headed outside! Interestingly enough, it's not the team's first face off braving the cold. Our Erin Connolly was there and has more on this unique practice.

COHOES, N.Y. -- They laced up their skates and then it was off to the races. Even a sign "danger keep off thin ice" didn't stop these fellas!

Seth Appert, RPI's hockey coach, said, ''So is the pond frozen is the big question. That's why we sent the freshmen on first. That's their rite of passage.''

The RPI men's hockey changed things up Wednesday when they decided to practice outside on a pond in Cohoes. There were no drills, just some good old fashioned scrimmaging.

Appert said, ''We consider ourselves a hockey family and you have to have fun with your family as well, so this is a good day to have fun.''

Bryan Brutlag, an RPI hockey player, said, ''This is awesome. This is why we love coming out. It's like being a little kid again.''

Some little kids were out to cheer on the squad. They came from the nearby Van Schaick Island School. Even the Mayor of Cohoes was there to support the team and its history.

John McDonald, the Mayor of Cohoes said, ''This isn't the first time RPI has come out here. As the story goes, back in 1901, they had their first game down here on the island and we celebrated.''

The highlight of the practice was no doubt when the best player graced the ice for the play of the day. Even with my heels on, I came out here on the ice to show the boys how it's done. But even with all the fun and games, the players still had a competitive spirit. No question they all wanted the prestigious title of "pond hockey champion." So what was at stake? None other than this bad boy.

Appert said, ''We're very proud of our hockey program's history and tradition. I try to get our guys to understand the importance of wearing that RPI jersey. What it means to the community and our school and it's just another great opportunity.''

Right now, the team is 12 and 10 with a tie. Next game is against local rival Union College. Face off is Saturday night at 7.
