TROY, N.Y. -- Troy Mayor Harry Tutunjian announces last year's statistics for the city's nuisance abatement program. Tutunjian explained the program began as a way to crack down on properties being used for illegal activities, including anything from noise and garbage complaints, to drug dealing.

Last year there were 139 nuisance abatement cases, with 28 of those involving narcotic evictions. Sergeant Terry Buchanon says police are keeping records of nuisance complaints to identify repeat offenders.

"Addressing the, in many cases, smaller problems that become bigger ones and essentially keeping score and making people accountable to create a positive environment for everybody,” said Terry Buchanan.

Depending on the offense, properties are given points for violations. If a property receives twelve points in six months or eighteen points in twelve months, it could be closed down for up to a year.
