SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Schenectady County Legislator Susan Savage is introducing a proposal that would require county restaurants to post nutritional information.
The law would make chain restaurants with 15 or more locations in the county to post calorie counts on menus. New York City and five New York counties, including Albany, have passed similar laws in an effort to combat obesity. Lawmakers say the law would enable customers to make better informed decisions on what they eat.
"This is a law that would be very easy for them to comply with and it'll just give more information to consumers,” said Susan Savage.
"It’s an effort on the part of the county to introduce more transparency into our people's food choices,” said Gary Hughes.
A public hearing will be held next week on the proposal with a vote is expected in March.
