SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Schenectady firefighters are investigating a fire that broke out around 9 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters arrived at 893 Emmett Street to find heavy smoke coming from the home.
Those on the first floor were able to make it out safely, but two people were trapped on the second floor. Firefighters were able to get ladders to the second floor to rescue them.
"Heavy smoke was pushing these people from the second floor. Heavy smoke and high heat. We were just able to get up there get them out in the nick of time,” said Chief Bob Farstad.
Several people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and exposure to the cold. The Red Cross is helping the family affected by the fire.
