SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A 23-year-old man is shot and killed in Schenectady in the city's first homicide of the year.

Police say the victim is Ganesh Ramgoolam, a Guyanese national who lived in Schenectady. It happened at 2 a.m. Saturday outside 948 Maple Avenue.

Police responded to several gunshots and found the victim shot in the head multiple times. He had gotten out of a car parked nearby when he was killed.

Ramgoolam suffered five gunshot wounds to the upper part of his body including his head. Police are interviewing several witnesses, but would not confirm whether a vehicle was seen leaving the scene.

"The male was pronounced dead on scene by the Schenectady Fire Department. Unknown what the circumstances are surrounding the shots; it's being investigated by our detective department and New York State Police major crimes unit,” said Sgt. Luciano Savoia, Schenectady PD Patrol Supervisor.

Neighbors say they've noticed drug activity in the area. Police are asking for your help. If you have any information, you're asked to call Schenectady City Police at their tips line at 788-6566.
