ALBANY, N.Y. -- The National Organization for Women thinks Governor Paterson should resign following a report that he directed two staffers to contact a woman about a domestic violence incident involving one of his aides.

The New York Times reports that Paterson personally directed two state employees to contact the woman who told police she was assaulted by her then-boyfriend, David Johnson, a top aide to Paterson who has since been suspended.

The Times also reports that one of the staffers apparently arranged a phone call between the woman and the governor. The assault case was dropped when the accuser did not show up for a hearing on Feb. 8.

NOW President Marcia Pappas said despite the governor's excellent record on women's issues, it's time for him to resign.

"It is inappropriate for the governor to have any contact or to direct anyone to contact an alleged victim of violence. This latest news is very disappointing for those of us who believed the governor was a strong advocate for women's equality and for ending violence against women," said Pappas. "We at the National Organization for Women-New York State believe that, in spite of the governor's heretofore excellent record on women's issues, it is now time for the governor to step down."

In a public appearance Monday, Paterson declined to comment on the case, citing an investigation by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. He also said he will not resign.
