TROY, N.Y. -- "It's true that when people say, when it's time you'll know it, and it's time. I know it."

It was a bittersweet moment for Troy Police Chief Nicholas Kaiser as he announced his retirement Wednesday morning. After 35 years on the job, Kaiser said it's with mixed emotion he leaves his post.

"I feel like I'm going to miss everybody and everything about it, but at the same time I'm happy to be moving on to the next chapter," he said.

Kaiser started with the Troy Police Department in 1975 as an officer and worked his way through the ranks becoming chief in 2003. For the past 17 years, Kaiser said he's been privileged to lead the department and serve the people of Troy.

"There have been huge moments for me personally, one of which is the Atkinson homicide, which was the Stewart's homicide in north Troy. When we revisited that case when I was chief of detectives, we put new eyes on the case and we were eventually able to make two arrests. They both have gone to prison since," he said.

And Kaiser isn't wasting anytime making plans for that next chapter of his life.

"Thursday I'm on the road to Florida," he said. "I teach part-time at Hudson Valley; I am going to continue to do that. Become fluent in Spanish, which is kind of weird, but I have a base knowledge of Spanish and I've always wanted to become fluent so I'll do that. As well as attempt to write a book. I'm a good writer, and I think that is something I would enjoy. I love reading police novels myself so I think I'll give it a shot."

As for who will replace Kaiser, no decision has been made yet. He said there are three eligible candidates within the department and Mayor Harry Tutunjian will make the final call.
