COLONIE, N.Y. -- Around 12:35 early Saturday morning, residents on Watervliet-Shaker Road heard something strange.
"Something woke me up and then I hear...my wife and I heard two sounds that sounded like a car backfiring or gunshots," said Colonie resident Peter Reilly.
Turns out, it was the latter. Albany County Sheriff's Deputy Vincent Igoe spotted a man acting suspicious while on security patrol at Albany International Airport. He then swung his car around to ask the man what he was doing.
"The subject then threw a baseball-sized piece of concrete at the deputy," said Albany County Sheriff James Campbell.
The block missed Igoe, and at that point the sheriff's office said the man made an aggressive move toward the deputy. Then came the moment that pierced the night's silence.
"He brought his arm forward from behind his back and made a forward movement as he lunged. And at that point the deputy fired two rounds at the subject," said Sheriff Campbell.
Colonie police were called in for backup and the man was rushed to Albany Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:22 am. Since they didn't have a chance to interview him, authorities may never know what the man was doing there.
"That road is dark so if you see someone, believe me, you're going to inquire. It's unlit and it's very commercial," said Campbell.
After searching the scene, authorities determined the man deputy Igoe shot was not carrying a gun.
"Well, it's the very early stages of the investigation, but for now it looks like he operated within the rules, policies and procedures of our department," said Albany County Undersheriff Craig D. Apple.
Meanwhile, the folks on Watervliet-Shaker Road are still trying to wrap their heads around what happened while they were sleeping.
"I think it's puzzling," said Reilly. "I think my daughter, who saw more out the window than we did, is unnerved by it."
The Albany County Sheriff's Office still has no idea who this man is since he was not carrying identification. They ran his prints through the national database and did not find a match.
A group of illegal immigrants were picked up by the Colonie police in Latham Friday night. As of now, there doesn't appear to be a connection, but the sheriff's office thinks it may shed some light on why they are having such a hard time identifying the man.
