ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Albany County sheriff held a news conference Monday to release the identity of the man who was shot and killed by a deputy over the weekend.
The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday on Watervliet Shaker Road near the Albany International Airport.
The sheriff's office said Deputy Vincent Igoe was on security patrol when he stopped a man identified as Marcos DeJesus Alvarez, 36, who was walking in a secure area near the airport. Police said Alvarez threw a piece of concrete at the deputy and then lunged at him. The deputy fired two rounds at Alvarez, who was taken to Albany Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Alvarez did not have any identification on him, but the investigation led police to 59 Central Avenue after interviews with three illegal immigrants who are being held at the Albany County Correctional Facility.
Albany County Undersheriff Craig Apple said, "We decided to re-interview the immigrants that we had at the county correctional facility. Upon speaking to them, one of them indicated that it could possibly be an individual named Marcos who lives down on Central Avenue."
During a search of the home, police found fictitious documents with Alvarez's name on them, as well as paperwork indicating he was sending money back to Mexico. Upon returning to the residence on Sunday, investigators also located Alvarez's brother-in-law, who also turned out to also be an illegal immigrant.
Alvarez had been working sporadically at a property management company in Schenectady. He was married with five children who all reside in Mexico. Investigators made contact with his wife Sunday night.
The sheriff's office said it appears the deputy acted appropriately under the policies and procedures of the department.
