Common Council questions Krokoff

By: Erin Vannella

Albany police chief nominee Steven Krokoff appears to be on the fast-track to confirmation. After questioning the current acting chief for more than three hours Monday night on how he would lead the department, the city's Public Safety Committee unanimously endorsed his nomination. Now, it's up to the full Common Council to decide Krokoff's future. Erin Vannella reports.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- He was the top pick of the search committee and of the mayor, but Monday night, the Albany Common Council got the chance to grill police chief nominee Steven Krokoff.

This was the second and final public hearing on his nomination. Residents had their chance to weigh in last week. This time around, it was the council's turn to ask questions and there were a lot of them. They asked Krokoff about community policing, how to make Albany safer and what steps he would take to ease racial tension in the community.

"Part of the strategy that I have, that I would look to employ, along with my leadership team, is how to better engage the community. Collaborate, work together, analyze what the problems are, get to the root of the issues that are causing fear and then come up with action plans and solutions to these issues," Krokoff said.

The council has until early next month to confirm or reject Krokoff. If they don't make any decision, he'll automatically be made chief.
