TROY, N.Y. -- The Troy Police Department is responding to allegations that officers used excessive force on an RPI student over the weekend.

There is YouTube video of an incident on the campus which allegedly shows Luis Luberes, 21, being arrested by officers following a complaint about a fight on 15th Street. According to the police report, officers dispersed a large crowd when Luberes pushed an officer and continued to fight with them while being arrested. Witnesses, however, recall the officers using excessive force, but Police Chief John Tedesco says he believes there was no wrongdoing.

"And at this point in time, I feel the officers acted appropriately. They acted in self-defense and just because you have a badge on does not mean you are a punching bag. This person was violent toward the officers. They took the necessary actions they were trained to do. I don't see any evidence there was of excessive force whatsoever," said Tedesco.

Chief Tedesco says Luberes refused medical attention. He also says no formal complaint has been made and the officers remain on active duty.
