TROY, N.Y. -- "It was a warp speed deliberation in my opinion; it took less than three hours," said Rensselaer County District Attorney Richard McNally Jr.

It took less than three hours for jurors to convict 31-year-old Daiman Burkett of second-degree murder and criminal weapon possession for strangling his 32-year-old girlfriend Des-Hawn Parker to death on Feb. 26, 2009, all because he found out Parker planned to break up with him.

"Des-Hawn Parker had it all going for her," said McNally. "This was a domestic violence situation that she tried to extricate herself from."

Unfortunately, it was too late. Burkett has a history of violence, arrested over the years on a number of charges, including rape and assault. When he murdered Parker, he even did it with her two young children in the house.

"Des-Hawn's son had to testify," said McNally.

Both children were unharmed and her son's testimony, coupled with DNA evidence and the crime scene itself, proved more than enough for the jury to return a swift verdict.

"He had self-inflicted numerous wounds on himself, [Parker] was dead in the basement having been strangled to death," said McNally. "[Burkett] kept the police at bay. He had to be subdued."

Burkett's attorney, Robert Molloy, did not return a voicemail seeking comment. His client is expected to appeal the decision. He's facing 25 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for Sept. 28.
