Layoffs looming for state employees

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Despite a very late budget that saved state employees from furloughs, Governor Paterson is once again revisiting his plan to layoff state workers before the end of the year.

Governor Paterson says early retirement incentives are not adding up to the $250 million needed to keep the state fiscally solvent. He says he is making the tough decisions that are right for the state and not to blame him for the financial crisis.

"For some reason these individuals think they are more special than the special interests. They will blame the layoffs on me. But in their hearts, they know their failure to come to the table and give the slightest bit of concession is the reason we are in the situation we are in now," the governor said.

Worker unions meanwhile are speaking out against the news saying state employees should not be punished because of a lack of leadership in Albany.
