GHENT, N.Y. -- Severe weather hit two Eastern New York towns, but not the kind you might expect.
A tornado touched down in the Town of Ghent early Wednesday morning with gusts hitting 95 miles per hour. The National Weather Service says it struck around 5:18 a.m., uprooting trees, damaging several roofs and destroying fences along its brief two-mile path.
A few miles south in Claverack, a strong downburst knocked down trees and tore shingles off roofs. Thankfully, no one was injured in either spot, but the tornado caused thousands of dollars in damage in just a short time.
"All of a sudden, there's a noise that sounds like a jet engine. You know when you hear people say it sounds like a freight train? It sounds like a freight train. And then trees hitting the front of the house. Things blowing around the house, you know, yard furniture becoming airborne, just amazing stuff," said Ghent resident Jo Von Bieberstein.
Tornadoes are extremely rare in any part of the country, let alone eastern New York, during this time of year when temperatures typically don't get warm enough for a twister to form.
