ALBANY, N.Y. -- On Wednesday, police arrested 38-year-old registered sex offender Keith Dare outside of his Osborne Street home in Albany in connection with the rape of a woman at her Dove Street apartment.
"This was done in conjunction with the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force as well as the New York State Police Forensics Investigation Center. We were able to connect DNA evidence through the center to the suspect," said Albany Public Safety Spokesman James Miller.
Police said they have reason to believe Dare knocked on the door of a 21-year-old woman's apartment at 9:30 in the morning November 29th. Police said he forced his way in, gagged the woman and threatened to kill her and her 2-year-old child. Police said he then raped the woman on her bed, demanded cash from her wallet and ran.
"We're extremely pleased with today's announcement," said Miller. "All the people that worked on it did a phenomenal job, put a lot of resources into it, and obviously understood the gravity of what happened. We're at least pleased today that we've found at least one suspect in the one rape that we have."
Dare is charged with rape, burglary, robbery and endangering the welfare of a child. Police said Dare, a level three registered sex offender, became a suspect early in the investigation. He had been arrested in 1989 for a similar crime.
"He got sentenced to prison and just got released, but he had maxed out his sentence so he wasn't on parole," said Miller. "But he had to be a registered sex offender."
Police said it's difficult to say whether Dare is connected to last week's reported rape on Quail Street.
"We'll look at the one on Quail Street as well as other ones that are outstanding, but it's too early to say right now," said Miller.
Dare is being held in Albany County Jail.
