ALBANY COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Town of Bethlehem has entered a bid to purchase the historic Normanside Country Club in Delmar.
"We can confirm that the town board submitted a bid for the Normanside debt," said Town Supervisor Sam Messina.
Messina confirms the bid at a public meeting Wednesday night, although the decision came with both criticism and some support.
Last week, Bethlehem residents presented the board with a petition signed by 750 people, urging them to purchase the property and transform it into a municipal golf course or just preserve the open land.
On the other hand, some say a bid by Bethlehem for the property is a waste of taxpayer money.
"I'm disappointed about the town's decision. Really what I'd like to know is that if the town board members are going to let us know which members voted for and which members voted against, regardless if you're for the purchase or against the purchase, I think that everybody in the community would love to know which representatives voted which way so that we know where our representative stand on this critical issue," Bethlehem resident Jeffrey Near said.
The town has to still win the bid. Bank of America owns the mortgage on the bankrupt country club.
