ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany Medical Center is paying $4.5 million to settle its share of a nursing pay lawsuit.

The suit stems from about 4,000 nurses saying officials allegedly conspired with other hospitals in the Capital Region to keep wages down.

The Associated Press is reporting similar settlements were reached with St. Peter's Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, Samaritan Hospital and Albany Memorial Hospital for about two percent of nurses pay from June 2002 to June 2006. The AP also reports a lawsuit remains open against Ellis Hospital.

The hospital companies admit no wrongdoing.

In a statement, Albany Medical Center said, "While Albany Medical Center continues to deny any wrongdoing as we have from the outset of this case, we have agreed to settle this lawsuit to limit the expense and distraction of additional court proceedings. We will not put the cost to continue fighting this lawsuit before the critical needs of our staff, patients and the public."
