ALBANY, N.Y. -- "They got the place on lockdown," said Jake Henrikson of Albany.
Police presence in the Pine Hills neighborhood on Thursday was noticeable. The heightened St. Patrick's Day patrol put students living on Hudson Avenue on notice; there won't be a repeat of Saturday's riot.
"They got the paddy wagon. They got...it's everything. They're pulling out all the stops. I think it's going to be like this for a little while."
On Wednesday, UAlbany student and Queens native Evan Sapio, 18, turned himself in to police, feeling the heat just hours after his photo was made public along with more than two dozen others cropped from several YouTube videos capturing Saturday's melee. Sapio told police he believed he was the man in pictures 12 and 15, the same person who can be seen in the video helping inflict more than $6,000 in damage on a Nissan Maxima.
Sapio pleaded not guilty Thursday to felony felony charges of first-degree riot and second-degree criminal mischief.
Albany Public Safety Spokesman James Miller said, "You can come to this city and enjoy yourself and get a great education and enjoy all that is involved. But anytime you're going to get involved in excessive alcohol consumption and engage in conduct like that, you're going to be held responsible."
"You know, respect your surroundings," said Henrikson.
Some in the area feel a few bad "kegs and eggs" spoiled St. Patrick's Day for the bunch.
"We're just trying to play can jam and pretty much they shut us down while we were out here just throwing the frisbee," said Albany resident Charlie Gray.
"They don't go crazy every day," said Albany resident John Urban. "It's just one day a year that everyone gets out of control."
Bars around the neighborhood say their patronage isn't taking a hit on the holiday, and some folks down here say that's just the way it ought to be.
"Kids will be kids," said Henrikson. "There will be a few parties. They'll get broken up. Just keep the kids of age at the bars, keep the other kids inside."
Police will have an increased presence into Friday. Safety checkpoints are set up around the city and will be mobilized to any area where authorities feel there's a possibility for things to get a little rowdy.
Anyone with information about the individuals seen in the photos can call the Detective Division at (518) 462-8039 or text APDTIP. Tips can also be reported on the City of Albany's website.
