HOOSICK, N.Y. -- The situation with the propane tanker in Hoosick goes from volatile to stable in a matter of moments as crews were able to re-ignite the leaking fuel. Officials say there is now no threat of an explosion.
A team of technicians were able to reach the propane tanker where they found only a couple hundred gallons of propane left.
The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. Monday when the tanker truck carrying nearly 10,000 gallons of combustible liquid propane crashed off an embankment on the side of Route 7 and burst into flames.
Officials said most of the propane burned off due to large gashes on the tanker due to the initial explosion.
Crews were able to re-ignite the fire hoping the rest of the propane will burn off.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash.
The driver, who has been identified as John Makria of West Islip, was taken to Albany Medical Center with head injuries and is currently under observation. The truck is owned by Venezia Liquid Tank Line out of Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
