ALBANY, N.Y. -- "I was getting used to going to the Price Chopper with everybody asking me saying when the hell are you going to retire?" said Albany County Sheriff James Campbell.

After 45-and-a-half years in law enforcement, Albany County Sheriff James Campbell calls it quits.

"I've just found that it's a young man's game, you got to stay on top of it," said Campbell. "I'm not the speed demon on that computer either."

At 71, Campbell will be the longest tenured Albany County sheriff on record. And in 21-and-a-half years on the job, he did a lot.

"We created a station at the airport," said Campbell. "We were working on consolidation with cities and towns with 911. We just finished a mental health expansion at the jail."

A few accomplishments in a long list that he credits to a lot of help and hard work. They're tireless hours, said Campbell, that he and his wife will be happy to put in the past.

"I would imagine we're going to be doing some traveling because the furthest I took my wife was to Green Island once," said Campbell.

But it will be a big adjustment said Campbell, who doesn't like to be bored.

"I've been working, believe it or not, since I was 12-years-old," said Campbell. "I had a paper route in the morning and a paper route at night."

Now in the midst of his sixth term, Campbell readies for the newest phase of life that came with a strong push this winter from his wife.

"She wasn't threatening me, but she has her way," said Campbell. "She's been good."
