SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A community is trying to pick up the pieces after a 20-month-old boy suddenly died in Schenectady early Monday morning and police are ruling it a homicide.
Neighbor Antonio Feliz broke down as he reflected on the tragedy.
"We're all traumatized by it. We knew the family, we knew the kids. Beautiful kid," Feliz said.
Feliz said it was his wife who attempted to resuscitate the young boy who lived on Hattie Street.
"We were in the back having a barbecue and the boyfriend came out with the baby, saying the baby's not breathing," said Feliz. "My wife tried to give the baby CPR. I tried holding the baby's head so she could give him mouth-to-mouth."
The call for the non-breathing child came in late Sunday night at around 10:18 p.m. Police say they transported him to Ellis Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.
Feliz described the child he often bought ice cream for.
"It's a shame, it's a shame, a beautiful baby. Never seen him cry, never complaining. Always full of life, happy to see everybody," he said, voice cracking. "If that would've been my kid, I don't know what I would do."
Now only memories of the joy that the young boy brought to the neighborhood remain, with a makeshift memorial already forming on the street.
At this point, police have named no suspects and they are not releasing any further information. Both Schenectady Police and New York State Police are involved in this investigation.
