WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- The gloomy weather provided an appropriate backdrop to a sad day as friends and family say goodbye to Carol Lansing at St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet.

"She had great love of her faith, her family and her community," said Kathy LeRoux.

Lansing served as a trustee for the Village of Green Island. Friends describe a woman who kept busy donating her time and talents to those in need.

"Her family always did a haunted house on Halloween," said family friend Sean Ward. "She was involved in the economic development, she was heavily involved in senior issues."

Her vibrant life was snuffed out by an out of control SUV in front of St. Matthew's Church in Voorheesville. Fran Pallozzi and Rosemarie Hume were also killed. The women had been waiting for a walking tour to begin.

"In our faith, we don't know the day or the hour," said LeRoux, a member of the walking club. "It's just heartbreaking to think they won't be with us."

Driver LuAnn Burgess told police her flip flop got stuck by the gas pedal. Friends say had it not been for that accident, Lansing would be probably be beginning a week full activities to benefit the village.

"Carol helped me every Thursday giving food to the needy," said Jack Whited.

Those who knew Lansing best say her big heart will be missed.

"She did a lot for the people in the community," said Whited. "And I know when she gets up there, she going to do a lot up there."
