CAPITAL REGION -- With the race for Schenectady Mayor still too close to call, Board of Elections officials will begin recanvassing voting machines and counting the absentee ballots.

With about 9,000 votes cast, Acting Mayor Gary McCarthy and Alliance Party and Republican candidate Roger Hull are separated by just 77 votes. 530 absentee ballots still need to be counted.

Those ballots are almost split down the middle. 218 were sent from registered democrats and 206 from republicans.

Board of elections officials said they hope to declare a winner within the next two weeks.

And in Colonie, absentee ballots will also determine a winner for the town supervisor's race.

Currently, incumbent Paula Mahan leads challenger Denise Sheehan by fewer than 300 votes. Mahan has already declared victory in the race, but Sheehan said she will not concede until every vote has been counted.

There are 950 ballots to go through.
