WESTERLO, N.Y. -- "There was blood dripping down here, and I crossed my fingers that she would be okay," said East Berne resident Aaron Wright.
But the six-year-old did so much more than just that, after he'd gotten into a car accident with his mom.
It happened Saturday afternoon in the Town of Westerlo - Nikki Dober and her son had been driving on Joslyn School Road when she momentarily took her eyes off the road. When she looked back, their car had veered into oncoming traffic. Dober swerved to avoid a truck, but then lost control of the car.
"The next thing I remember was the wheels hitting the top of the hill and I just knew we were going to go down," said Nikki Dober.
Albany County Acting Sheriff Craig Apple said the car flipped over and fell down a 30-foot embankment.
"The first thing I did when we stopped was called his name and he said, 'Mom, I'm alright - where are you?'" said Dober.
"I thought my mom would die because she couldn't get out of the car," said Wright. "She had glass all in her hair."
"The next thing I knew, he had climbed out of the trunk," said Dober.
Not seeing his mom's cell phone anywhere, Aaron then started the climb up the steep, snowy embankment.
"I looked and I called for help," he said. "I screamed until someone came down."
Dober says her son's a hero.
"If no one had gone there, I don't know how long it would have been 'til someone found us," she said.
The two were transported to Albany Medical Center, but say their injuries weren't serious.
Since the accident, Aaron's been reaping the rewards of saving their lives.
"Everybody's loving on him and hugging on him," she said.
"You like all the attention? " asked our reporter.
"Yes!" nodded Wright.
Nothing less, says Dober, than what her brave son deserves.
