TROY, N.Y. -- Troy City Council President Clem Campana leaves the courtroom Tuesday after pleading not guilty to illegally promoting the election of democratic candidates for city council two years ago.
"He's charged with the same crimes the others are being charged with," said Campana's attorney Stewart Jones. "The difference is that he's innocent and they're not."
Campana joined three others in court, Councilman John Brown and Democratic political operatives Anthony Renna and Anthony DeFiglio. Each pleaded guilty to their charges. Campana, charged for falsifying business records, illegal voting and promoting an election said he did nothing wrong.
"This has been two years of hell for me and my family," said Campana. "And I've often learned that bullies are what they are and when you finally get punched in the face by the bully it doesn't hurt that much and you get to swing back."
"It was 60 days of house arrest," said Jones. "It was a plea to a misdemeanor in police court without consequence and he would not accept it because he cannot plead to something he didn't do."
Special prosecutor in the case, Trey Smith said justice will prevail.
"Getting at the truth has always been the primary goal of the investigation and the prosecutions from which have sprung that investigation," said Smith.
Campana's attorney declined to comment on what's next for his client.
