The man accused of killing a man during a home invasion in Cohoes is indicted by a grand jury. Our Erin Connolly has more on the charges the man now faces.

COHOES, N.Y. -- Cohoes Mayor John McDonald said, “It's incomprehensible that any individual would consider going into a senior apartment complex and robbing people, let alone assaulting them.”

But police say Mark Richardson, 53, did that and more. On the night of December 30, he's accused of going door to door looking to rob someone at the Ogden Mill senior apartment complex in Cohoes. John Sikala, 67, opened his door and was beaten and robbed and eventually died from his injuries. Richardson also allegedly assaulted Mary Miles, a neighbor of Sikala, on his way out of the complex.

Mary Dinelli, a neighbor of Sikala, said, “I'm just glad it turned out the way it did. That we were able to get this man off the streets and put him where he can do no harm to anyone.”

After being indicted by a grand jury Wednesday, Richardson, who has a lengthy criminal history, now faces a number of charges, including second degree murder, first degree manslaughter and burglary, robbery and assault. City officials credit police and neighbors for their quick work in this case.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares said, “You have a wonderful, competent police department, as well as good samaritans living in your community. These events aren't ones that occur often in Cohoes, but when they occur, the response is immediate and the response is effective.”

Richardson now sits in the Albany County Jail without bail. He'll be arraigned in Albany County Court on Monday.
