ALBANY COUNTY, N.Y. -- Local farmers voiced their concerns on the possible closing of the Albany County Farm Service Agency. The agency represents more than one hundred farmers in Albany County. A number of farmers attended the public meeting at the FSA Office in Voorheesville.
If the office does close, farmers in Albany County will have to conduct business in either Schoharie or Rensselaer Counties.
One Albany County farmer says pulling FSA out would be a big mistake in serving the agricultural community.
"I think it would be an awful mistake to give up this group that has been put together, just to save a few dollars to consolidate. We have a good deal here. The rent we pay is very competitive. Anything you do to take this agency away to save money on the government level is going to cost the farmers many times the difference in travel and inconvenience," said Carl Peterson, Knox farmer.
Comments from this meeting will be sent to Washington, D.C. where the Secretary of Agriculture will make a final decision.
