SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Hundreds of Union College students help to spruce up the city of Schenectady as part of the 18th annual John Calvin Toll Day. Thanks to the combined efforts of a number of city organizations, volunteers helped to clean up parks, monuments, and other public spaces.
Members of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity tackled the Baptist Healthy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, cleaning up the grounds, and trimming back the gardens. Students said they're happy to spend their Saturday giving back to the community.
"Schenectady gets a bad rap, but we really love it here, and we just want to give back to the community, and we've met some really nice people in the house since we've been here. And, it's nice helping out and making it a prettier place," said Jesse Allen-Dicker, Union College senior.
John Calvin Toll Day is named after one of Union's first graduates. It is part of a fun that encourages the college's students to volunteer in their community.
