CAPITAL REGION -- Although Veterans Day is this weekend, many troops are taking the time to help the victims of Sandy. Lieutenant Colonel John Andonie of the Troy-based 42nd Infantry Division, is one of the more than 4,200 New York National Guardsmen who have been deployed downstate to help with the Sandy relief effort.

To day, they have cleared more than 5,000 cubic yards of debris and served nearly 2 million FEMA meals to those affected by the storm. With so much work left to be done, there's no timetable for the soldier's return.

"We'll stay as long as needed, as long as our state needs us, we'll be out there. We have seen a lot of improvement over the last week and a half, but there's still a lot of work to be done, and we've got a lot of motivated soldiers, sailors, and airmen, we're all ready to go," said Andonie.

Andonie is from Clifton Park and serves as the 42nd Infantry Division's Operations Officer.
