GUILDERLAND, N.Y. -- The Salvation Army kicked off its annual Red Kettle campaign Friday. Twenty-eight kettles will be placed throughout the Capital Region.

More than $147 million was donated through the campaign across the country last holiday season.

Organizers say the money goes a long way.

Major Giselle Acosta of Albany Area Services said, "When they put money in the kettle, it goes towards helping a family in need. All of the money stays locally here in Albany so all the money goes toward assisting families in need. And not just for Christmas. It helps us stretch it throughout the year for food pantry, soup kitchen, any other assistance we are able to provide."

The red kettles will be out through Christmas Eve.
