Schools react to gun legislation

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The devil's in the details, but when it comes to the pages of New York State and federal gun control measures, school officials say they've found some good.
Currently, the state doles out money to school districts to help them pay for building improvements. Each district has its own aid ratio. Under the new NY SAFE Act, the state will bump schools' aid ratios by 10 percent.
The extra money is for security devices, like cameras and stationary metal detectors.
Our federal government is also pitching in. One of the 23 executive orders President Obama signed Wednesday provides incentives for school resource officers.
School leaders say the money couldn't come at a better time.
NYS School Board Association Executive Director Tim Kremer said, "If there's a pool of money there available for us and we could use that to upgrade access into our schools, we'll take advantage of that."
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Superintendent Patrick McGrath said, "You take care of roofs, you take care of windows, you take care of busing and transportation, and you take care of security. Those are kind of the baseline things."
