AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Above a river run wild, electrical engineers take to the sky.

"What we have to do today is essentially string an electric conductor or electric line across the Mohawk," said National Grid spokesperson Alberto Bianchetti.

National Grid, with the help of a helicopter and specialized linemen, re-wired electricity between towers still standing on the north and south shores.

"We had three structures between the towers we're going to use today and the tower that's on the top of the hill," said Bianchetti. "Those were all washed away when the Mohawk jumped its banks and started to erode the riverbank."

Nearly 20,000 customers had lost power in the storm but had it restored before Monday's work. Engineers said it's a temporary fix until the permanent lines are in place.

"In terms of a customer impact, it was a pretty modest customer impact," said Bianchetti. "You never want to tempt fate by telling Mother Nature it wasn't as bad as it could've been."

Route 5 faces temporary closure while National Grid works. They will not replace the three towers lost in the storm.
